I have always been drawn to art and captivated by technology, two very distinct and diverse worlds. My business life incuded research and manufacturing which I enjoyed and was fortunate enough to have a few patents to my name. For most of my life art was a hobby and I used it as a form of relaxation doing sculptures for pleasure. My sculptures were made from polymer clay using copper rods and tin foil armatures, some getting as large as 2 - 3 feet.
Recent developments in my business life have resulted in me having more time to pursue my interestes in art and technology leading me to start researching 3D scanning and 3D printing to determine if I could create art that was relatively permanent with a short gestation period from conception to completion. After many months of research and development I believe I have made significant progress in producing pieces of art of human faces with an exceptional likeness to the subject but with artistic flair. Through this process I found that there was a lot of interest in my research and this has lead me to launch this web site to share my knowledge of 3D scanning & 3D printing technology particualrly in the field of art.
Some have questioned if a 3D printed piece is really art, to which my answer is that a 3D scanner and printer are just tools that help in the creation of art. Just like photographic art uses a camera as tool, similarly the placement of the model, the design of the piece, the artistic enhancements made in the software and the hand finishing and mounting make a 3D printed piece a unique piece of art. I derive an equal amount of artistic pleasure from an IvarFace piece as I do from one of my polymer clay sculptures.
I am thrilled with the potential that this process offers and I want to continue to explore new technologies and opportunities to share this with others.
